A Saturday event at Tattnall Square Academy to benefit 13-year-old Abby Wilson of Macon is scheduled to include an appearance by actor Booboo Stewart of the “Twilight Saga” movie series.
The Twilight Moms of Middle Georgia, a group of avid fans of the movies, helped arrange Stewart’s visit to Macon. Abby is a big fan of the “Twilight” series, both the books and the movies.
Stewart, who plays the role of Seth, a werewolf in the films, says he wanted to attend Abby’s Dream Walk because Abby is “such a brave girl.”
Abby was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer four years ago at age 9, and doctors then expected her to live anywhere from three to five more years, seven at best.
Saturday’s event in her name is also to raise lung-cancer awareness.
“It’s gonna be all about her that day,” Stewart, 17, recently told The Telegraph. “It’s gonna be fun. It’s gonna be a good thing. ... I want people to know that anyone can get lung cancer at any age.”
The $20 benefit lasts from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Tattnall Square Academy, located at 111 Trojan Trail. There will be lunch, a kiddie corral and a raffle. There will also be a walk at the school ‘strack beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Abby undergoes monthly rounds of chemotherapy, her mother, Tina Wilson, said. “Right now, she’s taking it one day at a time.”
Tina Wilson said that when Abby heard Stewart would be attending her benefit that “she was stunned, shocked.”
“She can’t believe that he is coming here for her,” Tina Wilson said. “I don’t think she can grasp the fact that he’s coming from California. This is somebody she watches on her favorite movie, and he will actually be here.”
She said her daughter and Stewart had been in touch via Facebook: “He’s really a genuine, generous, kind-hearted soul. He’s just gone out of his way to do this.”
Tina Wilson said her hope at the benefit is for folks who attend to try and walk 18 laps on the track in one hour, a very brisk walking clip of better than 4 mph.
“It is near impossible to do it,” she said. “But we want people to understand the devastation of lung cancer. It represents the 18 people who die every hour from lung cancer.”
