Variety assesses the 'Breaking Dawn' situation

Every Twilight fan out there knows without a doubt that The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn is not a project that Summit Entertainment is apt to let slip through the cracks. Why would they? Not only would they lose a very profitable opportunity, but they'd also leave Twilight fans disappointed - very disappointed - and it doesn't seem that this is the conclusion sought by the film studio.
That said, a lot of fans were probably expecting a Breaking Dawn announcement shortly after some of the staggering numbers from The Twilight Saga: New Moon's opening weekend take - but to no avail. Nearly two weeks after the film's theatrical release, things are still (and this is a bad pun) Up In The Air on Breaking Dawn.
Variety opines that the Breaking Dawn situation is as follows: the studio is renegotiating contracts because they want to make the film a two-parter. While there's no official word on this (and my policy is to wait for such confirmation and regard things like this as speculation), it's certainly an interesting observation. Variety continues to say that if Breaking Dawn is meant to be two films, it'll take a lot more leg work to organize the endeavor - including courting back The Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz in spite of his interest in directing The Gardener.
Again, it's all speculation at this point, but it's still a perspective Twilight fans might not be surprised to hear from a source such as this. It's definitely the common sense approach to the matter.
What is known, for sure, at this point is what the studio had to say on the matter a few days ago: "Summit Entertainment looks forward to bringing 'Breaking Dawn' to the big screen but at this point any additional information is premature." Recognize that word, "premature?" If so, you'll remember it's the same phrase utilized back in August against Boo Boo Stewart's assertion that there'd be five films as well. Take that as you will.
A couple of additional considerations, aside from money, that may be in play might be the fact that casting the character Renesmee will be difficult - if not impossible absent the use of CGI (ahem, another reason why Weitz might be the necessary director on point) - and that there'll be an incredible new roster of castmates on call for the various vampire posts. Finally, shooting locations, timelines, and actor schedules are always a muck in the mix. Que sera, sera.
